FDA Veteran Brings Specialized Cybersecurity Expertise
Seth Carmody, PhD, a well-known medical device cybersecurity expert with more than eight years of leadership experience at the U.S. Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was named today to the CAREier Advisory Board. With his specialized background, Dr. Carmody brings a deep understanding of the issues affecting device security as well as their implications for patient privacy and regulatory status to the critical healthcare messaging firm.
Dr. Carmody launched his career at the FDA in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). At CDRH, he served as a medical device reviewer and consumer safety officer, working mainly in the diabetes technology and device software spaces.
Following this, for more than four years, Dr. Carmody served as cybersecurity program manager in CDRH’s Office of the Center Director. In that role, he architected technology policy and built a response group to deal with vulnerabilities and cyber-attacks in medical devices.
Currently, he is vice president of regulatory strategy for MedCrypt, an innovative supplier of security solutions for medical device vendors.
“As the number and diversity of medical devices and healthcare IT systems expand, cybersecurity is becoming more important and complex than ever before,” comments Dr. Carmody. “Device manufacturers need a reliable communications network to ensure vital security information is exchanged and regulatory demands are met. Until now, reaching all the required stakeholders—from patients to physicians and hospitals—was essentially impossible, requiring resources better spent elsewhere. But CAREier changes that. It’s a revolutionary concept and company, and I am extremely excited to play a role in their success.”
“Dr. Carmody combines sophisticated knowledge of medical device cybersecurity and FDA processes and regulatory paths,” comments Ryan Bass, CAREier chairman and CEO. “This expertise is hard to match. We’re thrilled to have him on our team and we know he will be a major contributor to our continued success.”
No one should be harmed or die because of a medical intervention meant to save their life. Yet, every year thousands of people suffer needlessly due to a failure to communicate critical patient information across the entire healthcare ecosystem. A case in point is those who miss mission-critical messages about medical devices implanted in their own bodies. Hospitals, providers, device manufacturers and many others, as well as patients themselves all must contribute to deliver the message.
CAREier’s mission and passion is facilitating the delivery of critical healthcare messages. By eliminating the archaic, manual processes in place today, CAREier closes a significant communications gap and supports comprehensive information exchange and collaboration among all healthcare constituents, improving patient safety and saving lives. CAREier leverages leading edge technology, proven processes, and an innovative perspective to create an ultra-reliable, modern communications system achieving one seemingly simple but challenging goal: immediate, reliable delivery of mission-critical healthcare messaging to enhance patient safety, patient care and better patient outcomes.
